About me
Intro
Hello, I’m Charlotte Ferns - an experienced psychotherapy trainee, with hundreds of hours spent with clients in many contexts. I am currently working towards an MSc Integrative Psychotherapy and accreditation by the UKCP, the UK’s leading professional body for psychotherapists. All of my work is conducted in line with latest research and thinking, supervised by an experienced professional, and meets ethical standards.
Feedback from clients has indicated that I’m warm, insightful and really alongside them - asking questions, gently challenging and offering new perspectives whilst being down to earth. I am genuinely committed to anti-oppressive practice and welcome clients from all backgrounds and identities.
I offer affordable private psychotherapy in Exeter, online, or walk-and-talk therapy in nature around East Devon and Dartmoor.
In my personal life, I enjoy: gardening, swimming, picnics on the beach, dog walks, good music, reading, and creative crafts. I lived and worked in London for many years before moving to Devon a few years ago with my partner to enjoy the beautiful landscapes, community and lifestyle.
Therapeutic Approach
We’ll work together to understand more fully what’s going on for you. I draw on contemporary theories to give you practical insights, including: how our nervous systems are regulated, the relationship between mind and body, early development and how our wellbeing is interconnected with our identity, relationships, and the world around us. We might look at the impacts of trauma on your sense of self, and explore subconscious dynamics or relational patterns that might be keeping you stuck.
I will always collaborate with you, sharing theories or approaches that may help to support or gently challenge you, to promote lasting growth and progress. I aim to offer my perspective lightly. I don’t diagnose based on medical/disorder models but have a working understanding of relevant mental health classifications, and can support you in accessing further mental health support if I see that specialist input could also be beneficial.
My hope is that whatever you wish to bring to therapy, you feel able to explore together openly and without fear of judgement. I will be alongside you, offering a fresh perspective and lending my experience to your situation.
My Experience
I have several years of experience of working with clients, both in voluntary charity placements and in private practice. I have addressed a broad range of concerns, including: anxiety, depression, loss and grief, substance dependency, and trauma or recovery from abuse. Whatever your story, I am interested in your unique situation and personal experience first and foremost.
I have completed voluntary placements at organisations, such as:
Headstrong Counselling - a leading provider of high quality, accessible online therapy at low cost.
The Swan Project - an established charity supporting those struggling with drug and alcohol dependency by addressing the underlying causes with compassion in long-term, low-cost therapy.
SAFE Foundation – supporting those who want to be free from the felt impacts of abuse over 8 – 12 sessions. This experience has been fundamental in helping me work in a trauma-informed way within impactful timeframes.
I am a current student on the reputable MSc Integrative Psychotherapy course at The Metanoia Institute. I continue to expand my learning with regular professional training sessions from a range of reputable providers. I have undertaken CPD in walking ecotherapy. Before training as a therapist and moving to Devon, I was a manager for organisations in London for many years.
Therapy has had a profound impact in my own life and I continue my own journey with a personal therapist every week.
Client Groups
I am especially interested in working outdoors in nature, with people who have experienced trauma or abuse, supporting young adults (18+years), therapy trainees and those interested in understanding themselves and how they show up in relationships more authentically or are navigating major life transitions.
I welcome clients of all backgrounds and identities. If you have any accessibility needs, please talk to me about these in the initial conversation so we can make appropriate arrangements to make the therapy space work for you.
I am really open and flexible, and understand how hard it can be to find a therapist, so please feel free to contact me for a free 15-minute initial conversation to discuss your needs.
Ethics and Safeguarding
I am a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy and subscribe to their ethical guidelines. Safeguarding and ethical practice, including confidentiality, respect and appropriate boundaries are very important aspects to me as a professional you can trust.
I receive regular supervision from an accredited and highly experienced professional, who reviews my work to ensure that I am working in the best interest of clients.
